Halls of Torment: Stats Explained

Halls of Torment has such an insane amount of stats, that there is virtually no way to really explain them all succinctly.
This is only a small portion of the stat sheet for one character: the Exterminator.

Stats Explained

The stats system in Halls of Torment is so extravagant and intricate, that I honestly think it’s praiseworthy. If you’re a new player looking for guidance, it’s nearly impossible to boil down this robust system into a one-size-fits-all guide.

Not only are there so many different stats, but they impact EVERYTHING in this game. Your character uses stats, the abilities you select use stats, even your items and equipment key off of stats.

And to top it off, there are some stats that are a bit too confusing or ambiguous. What exactly does Force do? Is there a difference between Block Strength and Defense? How does Multistrike work?

The goal of this primer is to answer these questions and more, to help you better understand the stats in Halls of Torment.

Character Sheet Breakdown

The first thing to note about the character sheet is that it is broken down into separate sections. Each section has a collection of stats, grouped by gameplay impact. These sections are Defensive, Miscellaneous, Main Weapon (which differs based on character), Offensive, and finally Item/Equipment Values.

There are also two columns listed for each stat. The leftmost column is the base value, which is the value before any upgrades or bonuses are applied. The right column is the final value, which is after all bonuses and upgrades have been calculated into the stat.

With this small tidbit in mind, let’s go over each of the stats in Halls of Torment.

Defensive Values

The defensive stats are the values that govern your health points and defensive capabilities. It is critical that you upgrade these stats if you want to survive on Agony mode.

Stat Explanation
Max Health Your maximum life total. Like most other games, when this reaches 0, you die. Unless you have any revives remaining, you fail the run and will return to camp.
Health Regen How much health you regen per second. During the course of a run you will end up naturally regenerating a lot of health, so it’s good to keep an eye on this value.
Block Strength Your Block Strength will determine which attacks you can negate the damage from.
Defense How much damage mitigation you have for attacks that hit you.

Block Strength vs. Defense

At first glance, Block Strength and Defense look like they do the same thing. But in reality they are vastly different stats. Understanding the difference between Block Strength vs. Defense is an important concept, that will help you better plan your character upgrades.

In short, Block Strength will outright negate damage done to you. The higher your Block Strength value, the more attacks you’ll negate. Defense however, will mitigate all damage that is done to you by a certain percentage, no matter the source.

Block checks are done before Defense calculations, so your character will always attempt to block an attack first. If the block fails, then your defense will kick in to mitigate the damage.

Miscellaneous Values

These are extra miscellaneous or utility stats that don’t really fit elsewhere. They impact very specific aspects of gameplay.

Stat Explanation
Movement Speed How quickly your character moves, measured in m/s.
Base Ability Slots The amount of abilities you can select. This is typically six, but some artifacts will lower it.
Pickup Range How far away you pick up items in the level (i.e. exp gems, food, potions, etc.)
Experience Gain How much extra exp you get when you pick up a gem.

Main Weapon Values

These stats are the ones that each character’s main weapon (primary attack) will use and key off of. The bulk of your most important stats lie here. The trait listed in the parentheses will improve the associated stat value.

Stat Explanation
Damage How much damage your character does.
Range How far your character’s primary attack will reach.
Attack Speed How often you attack per second.
Crit Chance The percent chance that your attack will crit.
Crit Bonus The extra damage is done when an attack crits.
Area Radius The Norseman and the Landsknecht weapons have this stat. It’s how large the area of the Frost Nova (Norseman) and the Grenades (Landsknecht) affect.
Multistrike For melee characters. Determines how many are performed during an attack action.
Projectiles (Multistrike) For ranged characters. Determines how many projectiles are fired during one instance of an attack.
Cone Angle (Area) How wide the cone of attack is. A higher cone angle means more area is covered.
Size (Area) Determines how large your attack area is.
Launch Velocity (Range) How quickly your character projectiles fire from their starting point.
Knockback (Force) How far you knock enemies back when you hit them.
Max Duration (Force) How long certain projectiles remain active for.
Piercing (Force) How many enemies your projectiles or attacks can hit before disappearing.
Damage Mod per Hit (Force) The Exterminator and and the Beast Huntress have this stat. Usually the Flame Caster (Exterminator) and the Spear (Beast Huntress) have their damage reduced by a percentage. This stat tells you how much damage those attacks actually do.

Cleric Specific Values

These values are only on the Cleric’s Holy Scepter weapon. The Scepter has a chance to inflict debuffs on enemies that it hits.

Stat Explanation
Fragile Chance on Hit The odds that you’ll inflict the Fragile debuff on an enemy when you hit them.
Affliction Chance on Hit The odds that  you’ll inflict the Affliction debuff on an enemy when you hit them.

Exterminator Specific Values

These values are on the Exterminator’s Flame Caster weapon. Each hit with the Flame Caster plus has a chance to burn enemies.

Stat Explanation
Burn Chance on Hit The odds that you’ll inflict the Burn debuff on an enemy when you hit them.

Landsknecht Specific Values

These values are on the Landsknecht’s Arquebus and Grenade weapons. She will attack normally with her rifle, and additionally launch a grenade every few seconds.

Stat Explanation
Multistrike Scaling Multistrike works differently for the Landsknecht than it does on other characters. She will only ever fire one shot per attack. What Multistrike does, is increase how often she will shoot. In short, it boosts her attack speed. You can find out more about her attack speed on the Halls of Torment wiki.
Grenades per Launch The amount of grenades that she releases when it’s time for the grenade attack.

Norseman Specific Values

These values are on the Norseman’s Dual Axes weapon. After every few attacks the Norseman will perform a large AoE Frost Nova.

Stat Explanation
Frost Chance on Damage Whenever the Frost Nova occurs, this is the chance that it will inflict the Frost debuff on enemies that get hit.

Shield Maiden Specific Values

These values are on the Shield Maiden’s Shield Bash weapon. She performs a Warhammer smash followed by a Shield Bash that can knockback elites.

Stat Explanation
Base Damage per Block The Shield Maiden’s Shield Bash does additional damage based on her Block Strength. This stat lets you know how much damage is done.

Sorceress Specific Values

These values are on the Sorceress’s Chain Lightning weapon. The Lightning will arc through and hit multiple enemies.

Stat Explanation
Emit Speed (Attack Speed) Determines how fast the Chain Lightning will fire out from the Sorceress’s hands.
Chaining (Force) This determines how many enemies a single lightning bolt will hit before it disappears.
Spark Chance on Crit Damage Whenever the Sorceress crits, this determines the odds that the spark debuff will be inflicted on the enemy that was crit.

Offensive Values

These are another sort of miscellaneous stat, that encompasses the debuff damage stats.

Stat Explanation
Burn Damage How much damage is done by the Burn debuff.
Spark Damage How much damage is done by the Spark debuff.
Frost Damage How much damage is done by the Frost debuff.

Item Values

This section will show the stats of all the items that you have equipped on your character. There are so many different items and so many different stats that they use, that it is impossible to catalogue them all here. It’s best to look at your character sheet during your run, to get the list of which stats are important for your gear.

Even with this detailed list of the stats in Halls of Torment, there are still a few that are not as clear. Force, Multistrike, and Piercing are special, in that they aren’t like the other stats listed. Let’s take a brief moment to clarify them some more.

Force

One of the most common questions in Halls of Torment is what does Force do? Well, Force is an interesting stat. The tooltips don’t help explain it, it’s left to you as a player to find out. Simply put, Force helps your character do what they do better.

Usually it will increase knockback, duration, piercing, and sometimes damage. It does so much and is extremely character dependent. Your best bet is to consult your character sheet, and see which stats are impacted when you boost the Force trait.

Multistrike

At a glance, Multistrike increases the amount of attacks you make per attack instance. What that means is if your Multistrike value is 2, then each time you attack you’ll swing your sword twice or shoot our 2 arrows.

But what about when your Multistrike is 2.5, or 2.3? Well, the game will store that decimal amount until it reaches a whole number. Then your next attack will include that addition +1 from the combined decimals.

Let’s see an example.

Say you’re playing the Archer and your Multistrike value is 2.3. When you attack, you will shoot out 2.3 arrows. But on screen, you’ll only see two. Behind the scenes the game will store that additional .3 and add it to your next attack.

So your second attack will shoot out 2.6 arrows. That’s 2.3 plus the 0.3 that was previously saved. Once again, you’ll see two on screen and the .6 will be stored.

Third attack, 2.9 arrows, and the .9 is stored.

Now on your fourth attack, you will fire 3.2 arrows. Meaning you will shoot out three arrows on the screen, and the .2 will be stored. Starting the process all over again.

Every bit of Multistrike counts and is used, even if you don’t see the extra projectiles or attacks on the screen. The values are being saved, and will be used once they cross the threshold.

Piercing

Piercing is used to determine how many enemies a projectile will pass through before it disappears. Usually, once a projectile hits an enemy, it’s done and will be removed from the screen.

However, if you increase your piercing stat, your attack will go through multiple enemies before disappearing. Making each instance of attack that much more effective.

Conclusion

Clearly, Halls of Torment has an abundance of stats to plan around. It’s such a deep system that is intricately weaved into all aspects of the game. We didn’t even touch base on how much stats impact the abilities you select.

But I hope you now have a better understand of all the stats in Halls of Torment. If you ever have any questions or need further clarification, consult the stat section of the Halls of Torment wiki.

Good luck on all your runs!
