Moth Kubit is an upcoming release from developer Helena Creative Studio. I was first made aware of this game from the August 2024 Nintendo Indie Showcase, and immediately fell in love. For me, this game has a lot of charm and personally ticks a lot of boxes for what makes game fun. By the end of this post, I hope you will be just as excited as I am.
Upcoming Release: Moth Kubit
Moth Kubit is an “experimental” RPG where you play as protagonist, Moth Kubit. Moth recently receives a promotion, but quickly finds himself wrapped up in a massive corporate conspiracy called “The Final Process”. Your goal is to uncover the mystery behind “The Final Process” and decide how you will shape Moth’s world. The basic premise sounds similar to other games, with a slight twist. But to me, what makes this game truly unique is the world in which Moth resides, the characters within it, and how you interact with them.
Everything about this game just oozes charm to me. It’s clear that the devs had a good time creating this game. The pixel art graphics are gorgeous, and the writing is full of bug related puns and humor. This game looks like if Franz Kafka stayed up all night playing Undertale and WarioWare, had a fever dream, then decided to make a game from it the following day. All throughout the game you will encounter various types of insects, your “bug-ddies”, each with a story that connects with Moth’s. So it seems like in order to see everything, multiple playthroughs and multiple endings are a given.
Verbal Combat
In order to reach the endings, you’ll need to speak with your coworkers. But the manner that you interact with your coworkers is fairly unique as well. Moth Kubit boasts a combat system that they’re calling “Love Sick Disorder”, or LSD for short. This combat system has been compared to a verbal showdown of sorts, with the choices you make having an impact on the story as a whole. And from what we’ve seen in terms of dialogue, the writing team has nailed it out of the park. A lot of the characters are going through mid life crises, that may make this game feel a little too real.
You can tell that the entire team just does not like stuffy office culture or corporate bureaucracy. One of the opening trailer scenes has Moth falling into despair in his work cubicle. It seems like this promotion is the worst thing to happen to him.
Minigames Galore
Another way you uncover the mystery behind “The Final Process”, is by playing through minigames. So far according to the trailers, there is a wide variety of games. I’ve seen a 2D side scrolling shooter, something that looks like dodgeball in a warzone, Dance Dance Revolution, and MS paint. And these are only a handful what they showed in the trailers. If you liked old school WarioWare games, then you may want to give this game a look.
Final Thoughts
The upcoming release Moth Kubit at first doesn’t seem like your typical RPG. It follows a similar formula that we are all used to; explore, solve puzzles, talk to people. But the way that you are able to do these things feels very different in this game. I think that this game has the rare potential to be very weird, but very fun, if it is done correctly. This is probably one of the games I am looking forward to the most next year.
Moth Kubit is currently scheduled to release in Spring 2025 for Nintendo Switch and PC, and is available for wishlist on Steam now.
