Ruffy and the Riverside Release Date

From Zockrates Laboratories comes indie game Ruffy and the Riverside. The first time I saw this game was from a Reddit post a few years ago, when it was just a short gameplay trailer featuring a slightly less refined Ruffy. And after watching the most recent trailer, I was shocked at the amount of progress that had been done since that post a few years back! Ruffy and the Riverside has a release date set for Q1 of 2025, so there isn’t too much longer to wait. Between this and Moth Kubit, early 2025 is looking pretty fantastic for indie games. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the Ruffy, let me tell you a little about this unique looking gem.

Every character is hand drawn. Ruffy himself has over 600 images.

What is Ruffy and the Riverside?

Ruffy and the Riverside is a 2D/3D action adventure platformer, where you play as a bear named Ruffy in his quest to save the Riverside. While the game features traditional platforming elements, the most enthralling feature is Ruffy’s incredible ability of ‘SWAP’. Using this ability, you can SWAP out almost any texture in the game with any other texture. The gameplay trailers highlight some pretty incredible uses of this power. You’ll use the power of SWAP to solve puzzles, defeat enemies, and complete quests all throughout the Riverside.

Ruffy demonstrates the power of SWAP by switching magma in place of a river.
The power of SWAP allows Ruffy to perform some amazing feats.

But the main draw for me, is the artwork in the game. It looks absolutely gorgeous. All the characters and their animations are drawn by hand, which pays off well in terms of game world aesthetics. It gives the impression that you’re playing a cartoon, and genuinely makes me want to explore more of the world.

The game transitions from 3D to 2D segments. These segments seem like minigames or bonus levels.

Final Thoughts

Ruffy and the Riverside is shaping up to be a beautiful looking game, and one that I am personally excited to play when it’s out. You can really feel the hard work and effort that the developers put into this game. Graphically it is stunning, and the SWAP mechanic looks like it could be a lot of fun.
